CygnaCom Solutions completes evaluation under Common Criteria
McLean, VA - November 5, 1999 - It was announced at the annual NISSC conference that ITT Industries' Dragonfly Companion has achieved a Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 2 rating from the Trust Technology Assessment Program. The Common Criteria for Information Security Evaluation is the new international standard for specifying security requirements for computer products and systems. Successful low-assurance evaluations against the Common Criteria (CC) are recognized by five nations under a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA). These six nations are the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Canada. The MRA allows vendors of computer security products to have their products evaluated as meeting a certain level of security assurance that is internationally recognized. Under the CC system, products certified in one nation will be recognized as meeting recognizable security standards in all of them, eliminating the need for costly, redundant, and time-consuming testing in each nation in which a company wishes to do business.
The United States is represented by the National Security Agency and the National Institute of Standards and Technology in international efforts to promote the Common Criteria. NSA and NIST have founded the National Information Assurance Partnership, which oversees the laboratory evaluation and product certification process. CygnaCom Solutions performed the actual evaluation of the Dragonfly Companion which certified ITT Industries' claims for its functionality which includes, among others, the ability to securely tunnel through classified networks with unclassified traffic and operate as a firewall.
