NIST releases MISPC Reference Implementation

McLean, VA - February 25, 1999 - The National Institute of Standards and Technology has recently released the reference PKI implementation for the Minimum Interoperability Specification for PKI Components (MISPC), developed by CygnaCom Solutions, Inc. The MISPC provides a basis for interoperation between PKI components from different vendors. NIST selected CygnaCom Solutions to create the MISPC reference implementation because of CygnaCom’s knowledge and expertise in the PKI arena, as well as the objectivity and independence that CygnaCom provides.

A public key infrastructure (PKI) issues, revokes and manages digital signature public key certificates. Digital signatures are intended to replace handwritten signatures as business moves to an electronic medium, and to allow unfamiliar parties to reliably authenticate each other. The MISPC specification consists primarily of a profile of digital signature certificate and certificate revocation list extensions, and a set of transactions. The transactions include requests for certification, renewal, and revocation.

The MISPC reference implementation software is a proof-of-concept PKI, and is not available as a commercial product. As part of the proof-of-concept, CygnaCom Solutions implemented a Certificate Authority, Registration Authority, Registration Client, and a tool for digitally signing and verifying files. The MISPC reference implementation software, complete with source code, is available directly from NIST.
