Top Layer: Top Layer Networks IDS Balancer V2.2(IDSB3531-CCV1.0, IDSB3532-CCV1.0, IDSB4508-CCV1.0)
The Top Layer IDS Balancer(tm) is a passive e.g. non in-line network
security appliance that enables consumers to send copies of data traffic to
multiple intrusion detection systems (IDS) units for different kinds of
examination and balances this traffic over one or more IDS units for
efficient use of resources.
The IDS Balancer product line consists of multiple ASIC based platforms and
runs a custom developed proprietary set of firmware. The IDS Balancer is a
stateful inspection device. This means that the Balancer examines packets
it sees, maintains a state table for traffic exchanges, and is configured by
the Administrator to either ignore the traffic or make a copy of the packets
for delivery to attached IDS for detailed analysis.
The Balancer's main function utilizes a Top Layer patented technique known
as flow mirroring. Flow Mirroring directs all copied packets for a flow to
a specified intrusion detection system (IDS) for inspection. Being a
stateful inspection device, the Balancer ensures that copies of both flows
that comprise a session are sent or mirrored to the same IDS to provide full
context.
